Why Dhaka Residents Find Effective Aftercare and Relapse Prevention Counselling at The Cabin Dhaka
What is Aftercare?
Aftercare is a period of time, post primary treatment, when a person receives additional or “top-up” counselling in order to help with the transition into a normal life of recovery, and receives help and support adhering to their relapse prevention plan.
What is Relapse Prevention?
The Cabin Dhaka defines relapse prevention as coping tools and techniques that people with chemical or process addictions can make use of to help maintain their recovery. You will learn how to deal with any difficulties you have during your recovery. You will also learn to effectively manage and overcome any stressors or triggers in your environment that may make you want to drink or use and cause you to fall back into an addiction. In aftercare you will learn things such as:
- Relapse prevention
- Cognitive tools
- Identifying your warning signs
- Knowing your triggers
- Managing your sober time
- A solid foundation for your recovery
- Developing new hobbies and interests
- Establishing a community based support network
When a person completes primary treatment, be it outpatient or residential, their journey is only beginning. The tools and techniques learned during treatment are a starting point, but are not intended to be all-inclusive. Often a client may experience unique challenges and problems post-treatment that they did not anticipate or have time to prepare for. Aftercare is a follow up to primary treatment and allows the client to learn additional skills as well as refine what they have already learned. Aftercare offers a transitional time in which the client still has a safe learning environment although they have basically reintegrated back into their everyday lives. Upon completion of a primary treatment programme, a client should have a clear and manageable relapse prevention plan. In aftercare, we can help ensure that the client follows through with these goals.
Identifying your Warning Signs
A relapse does not just suddenly occur. There are many things that lead up to it, such as outside influences and stress. There will always be some sort of warning sign or trigger before it happens. The relapse prevention programme will teach you how to identify these signs, and then show you what to do when they occur.
Knowing your Triggers
Triggers are anything that may cause you to use drugs or alcohol, or relapse into addictive behaviours. While you are in primary treatment, you will learn what triggers are and how to handle them. Once you are able to understand what may trigger you, you will be prepared for these triggers and can prevent a relapse before it starts.
Managing your Recovery Time
For most of us, addiction consumes a huge amount of both time and resources. Often a person in early recovery will find many ‘voids’ in their life that used to be filled with their addiction. It has been our experience that people do not function well with a deficit and it is our tendency to fill these ‘holes’ in our lives. Our programmed behaviours are to fill these with pleasure-seeking and often unhealthy behaviours and activities. In aftercare counselling you will learn to rebuild your life with a solid foundation and to create a quality life you can be proud of and content with.
A Solid Foundation for your Recovery
There are multiple challenges that you may face once you have finished your addiction treatment at a rehab programme. During the first 90 days after treatment, maintaining your sobriety may be difficult. You will be back in your own environment and may be dealing with many feelings and emotions. The Cabin Dhaka recognizes these challenges and difficulties and can help you make personal and lifestyle changes that increase your chances at long-term recovery.
How is Aftercare Arranged?
The main requirement for admission to our aftercare programme is completion of primary treatment for your addiction. While the majority of our clients have completed outpatient treatment with us, or residential treatment at our inpatient facility in Chiang Mai, we also accept aftercare clients who have completed primary treatment at another facility, on the condition they have maintained sobriety since discharge. A person cannot benefit from aftercare if they have not established a solid primary foundation and we would refer those who have recently relapsed to consider another primary programme. Aftercare at The Cabin Dhaka is customized around your needs and schedule and normally involves a combination of both group and individual sessions. For more information, please contact us
