What is addiction?

Addiction is a disorder that causes the brain’s reward circuits to malfunction. According to the National Institute of Drug Abuse (NIDA), up to 60% of addiction sufferers inherit the disorder genetically, while the remaining 40% may have damaged their reward system by overusing it. Consequently, people with this disorder seek to reinforce their blunted reward feelings by seeking out substances or processes that will increase pleasurable feelings. Once this happens, there is an impact on chemical cascades to other parts of the brain affecting functions like judgement and impulse control. This is why people suffering from addiction cannot control their using. Addiction is a chronic condition (American Society of Addiction Medicine, 2011) which means that it lingers, and symptoms will return if proper addiction treatment is not received.

Recovery Zones – Groups

Substance Dependency Process Group
Monday Evenings 5.00 – 6:30PM

This group is specifically for clients with a primary chemical addiction (alcohol, pharmaceuticals, and recreational drugs). Paired with the Substance Dependency Psycho-Educational Group, clients who are also attending individual counselling have the opportunity to share and learn from peers in various levels of their treatment.   The group is facilitated by the counsellor, but clients are encouraged to suggest specific topics that are important and relevant to them.  Discussion topics are compatible with individual treatment work as well as structured group educational materials.

Substance Dependency Psycho-Educational Group
Friday 5:00 – 6:30PM

This group demographic is specifically for clients recovering from substance addiction. Clients will navigate specific topics relevant to their treatment and recovery in a structured and supportive environment.  Educational material is presented in a clear and applicable manner, to compliment and support materials being addressed in individual counselling.  Topics are presented on a rotating schedule so that every client, regardless of where they are in their treatment process, will receive all relevant information and complete treatment with the tools necessary to maintain their sobriety.  Recovery tools such as CBT techniques and materials found in the program book are demonstrated and applied in a group setting, making understanding more tangible.

Process Addiction Group
Tuesday Evenings 6:00 – 7:30PM

Clients with a primary process addiction (non-chemical – such as gambling, sex, relationships, internet, etc.) are offered an opportunity to suggest and participate in discussions relevant to their personal addiction and recovery.  While paired with the Process Addiction Psycho-Educational Group, the format is less structured. Clients are able to relate to common issues with their peers such as navigating daily life and maintaining healthy boundaries and controls over addictive behaviours. The group session allows the sharing of common experience to gain empathy and understanding from their peers.

Family/Parental Psycho-Educational Group
Thursday 5.00 – 6.30PM

The Cabin Dhaka is now offering a Family Group as part of its treatment package. Mounting research-based evidence points to the importance of family in helping an individual achieve long-term recovery. Family members of those suffering from addiction are invited to attend this supportive and educational group, where they can learn about and participate in their loved one’s recovery and also begin their own healing and recovery from addiction. Family and friends of those suffering from addiction frequently experience depression, anxiety and stress. Our Family Programme is designed to help equip family members to cope with these stressors, and maintain their resilience in the face of such difficulties. Additionally, as their loved ones get into active recovery, many new questions arise which this group can help address. The Cabin Dhaka’s Family Group is open to those who have a family member willing to engage with our services, as well as those whose loved ones are not yet willing to engage in treatment.

Relaxation Group
Tuesday 5.00 – 6.30PM

This group, facilitated by one of our Clinical Psychologists, offers progressive Muscular Relaxation (PMR). This is an evidence based recovery tool thst eases anxiety and stress. This group is ideal for clients recovering from addiction but also for associated other mental heallth conditions. The group entails some body work (not physically intensive); breathing work, and guided meditation/ visualisation. The aim of this session is to encourage deep relaxation and provides a space that is safe, secure and soothing. It is highly recommended for any client attending any part of the program, mental health or for family members.

Process Addiction Psycho-Educational Group
Friday 6:00 – 7:30PM

This group demographic is specifically for clients recovering from process addictions. Educational material is presented in a clear and applicable manner, to compliment and support materials being addressed in individual counselling.  Unlike chemical addiction, some behaviours related to process addiction may need not be completely eliminated, but rather clients are required to identify when behaviours have become addictive. Topics are presented on a rotating schedule so that every client, regardless of where they are in their treatment process, will receive all relevant information so that they complete treatment with the tools necessary to maintain their sobriety.  Recovery tools such as CBT techniques and materials found in the program book are demonstrated and applied in a group setting, making understanding more tangible. Clients will learn how to establish boundaries and parameters that will restore them to functional and healthy lifestyle and arrest the addictive behaviour that is causing harm.

Relapse Prevention Continuing Care
Wednesday 6:00 – 7:30PM

This group caters to clients who have entered later stages of recovery. They have completed residential and/or intensive out-patient treatment and are offered the opportunity to continue their work in the Relapse Prevention Group.  This group facilitates an environment for clients to review and share recovery experiences, aftercare plans, sobriety goals and how they are navigating early recovery outside of structured recovery environments.  Some groups may involve specific and helpful education pieces while others will be more open for client issues and suggestions for discussions.  The groups are facilitated by a counsellor but clients are encouraged to take an active role and bring to the group issues relevant to them.
